Roaming
The new job here in Galway as a research assistant at the Ryan Institute has afforded me a rather obscene amount of travel since starting in June. Flung out to the UK and bounced across Europe has breathed life into cities and villages, far older than 'white Australia', that had remained fanciful and surreal as images or moving pictures. On foot here and there amidst the bustle and cafuffle, in summer stink and Autumnal chill, down sinuous cobbled lanes - haphazard splits betwixt soaring sandstone...
The left brain sponges what it can whilst the right fidgets with the possibility that I may never be able to find the way back to the hotel room. "Good grief, what have these bastards done with my hotel?!" Stray dogs snigger on their way past, smelling the fear. I stop and sketch, fiddle with pencil, ink and paint. It appears to be working again.
