Protect your surf mat with this heavy duty travel bag that features original acid dyed artwork by Ian Jermyn. This surf mat travel bag design is V2.
I got behind the sewing machine to sew this bag up from tough 1000 denier nylon canvas, nylon taffeta and finished it with a simple draw string closure at the top. There are webbing loops at top and bottom to attach a cord to allow the bag to be carried over the shoulder. They're robust and will provide your surf mat with solid protection. That said, you your common sense.
Acid dyed
The front panel features custom artwork that has been acid dyed and steam set. This process permanently impregnates the UV-stable textile dyes into the fabric. The dyeing was done by hand in the shed out the back of the house and set in my hand-built steaming chimney.
Materials
The acid-dyed artwork panel was from a previous project. The back panel was reclaimed scrap from a local sail-maker who was happy to see it reused. Both are approximately 1000 denier nylon.
The drawstring closure...er, thingy was bought from the shop. If this fails, let me know and I'll send you another free of charge. I'm looking for a better solution that doesn't involve plastic and when I work it out I'll send that to out if you're up for it.
The fabric used for the closure at the top of the bag is part of an old kite surfing kite. Tough nylon taffeta good enough to hurl someone through the air - good enough to hold your mat in the bag.
