Protect your surf mat with this heavy duty travel bag. The design uses salvaged material scraps and was hand sewn by myself on the northwest coast of Ireland in County Sligo, Ireland. Due to the random cuts used in the construction each bag has it's own individual character - no two are identical. This surf mat travel bag design is V6.

I got behind the sewing machine to sew this bag up from tough 1000 denier nylon canvas, nylon taffeta and finished it with a simple draw string closure at the top. There are webbing loops at top and bottom to attach a cord to allow the bag to be carried over the shoulder. They're robust and will provide your surf mat with solid protection. That said, you your common sense.

Materials

The acid-dyed artwork panel was from a previous project. The main sections on both front and back panels are scraps reclaimed from a local sail-maker who was happy to see it reused. The colour hits were donated from another mat maker. The fabric used is a combination of 500 or 1000 denier nylon making a robust cover to protect your mat.

The fabric used for the closure at the top of the bag is part of an old kite-surfing kite. If this tough nylon taffeta is good enough to hurl someone through the air - good enough to hold your mat in the bag.

The drawstring closure...er, thingy was bought from the shop. If this fails, let me know and I'll send you another free of charge. I'm looking for a better solution that doesn't involve plastic and when I work it out I'll send that to out if you're up for it.

Acid dyed

Some of the material for the rear panel features custom artwork that has been acid dyed and steam set. This process permanently impregnates the UV-stable textile dyes into the fabric. The dyeing was done by hand in the shed out the back of the house and set in my hand-built steaming chimney.
